Eyelash Extensions Aftercare: 12 Tips to Make Your Lashes Last Longer

You just left the salon with a gorgeous new lash set. Now the question is: how do you keep it looking that good? Good eyelash extensions aftercare is the number one reason some clients keep a full set for weeks while others lose lashes early. The good news is that it only takes a few seconds a day.

Eyelash extensions aftercare keeps wispy lashes full

Here are 12 simple tips from the lash artists at Fairy Lashes & Brows in Nederland and Lumberton, TX.

The first 24 to 48 hours

Lash adhesive needs time to fully set. What you do in the first day or two makes a big difference to retention.

1. Keep lashes dry

Avoid getting your lashes wet for the first 24 hours. That means no crying over sad movies, no swimming and no splashing water on your face. Some adhesives, like those used for UV lashes, cure instantly, so ask your artist what applies to your set.

2. Skip steam and heat

Saunas, hot yoga, steam rooms and very hot showers can weaken the bond while it is still curing. Wait at least 48 hours.

3. Hold off on heavy workouts

Sweat contains salt and oil, which can break down adhesive. A light walk is fine, but save intense sweaty sessions for day three.

4. Wash your lashes every day

This surprises many first-timers, but clean lashes last longer. Oil, makeup and dust build up at the base of your extensions and can loosen them. Use a lash-safe, oil-free foam cleanser and a soft brush, then rinse gently with lukewarm water.

5. Pat dry and brush

Gently pat lashes with a lint-free towel or let them air dry. Then brush them into place with a clean spoolie. Brushing every morning keeps your set fluffy and neat.

6. Go oil-free

Oil is the biggest enemy of lash adhesive. Check your cleanser, makeup remover, moisturizer, sunscreen and eye cream. Keep oily products away from your eye area.

7. Never pick, pull or rub

Pulling at extensions can take your natural lash with it. If a lash is sticking out or bothering you, leave it for your next fill appointment and let your artist fix it.

8. Sleep on your back (or use a silk pillowcase)

Sleeping face-down crushes and bends lashes. If you are a side or stomach sleeper, a silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction. Some clients also use a contoured sleep mask.

9. Skip mascara and lash curlers

Your extensions already do the work. Mascara clumps lashes and is hard to remove, and a lash curler can bend or break extensions.

10. Choose makeup carefully

If you wear eyeliner, pick a water-based formula and avoid waterproof products, which need oil-based removers. Apply eye makeup lightly and remove it gently.

11. Keep heat tools away

Open ovens, grills, campfires and hair dryers pointed at your face can singe or frizz synthetic lashes.

12. Book fills every 2 to 3 weeks

You naturally shed a few lashes every day, and your extensions go with them. Regular fills replace those lashes and keep your set full. If you wait longer than about four weeks, your artist may recommend a new full set.

Signs you need to see your lash artist

Extensions should feel comfortable. Contact your artist if you notice redness, swelling, itchiness or irritation that does not settle. If symptoms are strong or last more than a day, see a doctor. Never try to remove extensions yourself; a professional removal protects your natural lashes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I shower with eyelash extensions?

Yes, after the first 24 hours. Keep the water lukewarm and avoid aiming the shower directly at your face.

What cleanser is safe for lash extensions?

Use an oil-free, lash-safe foaming cleanser. Ask your artist for a recommendation at your appointment.

Why are my lash extensions falling out so fast?

The most common causes are oil-based products, skipping daily cleansing, rubbing your eyes and sleeping face-down. Your natural shedding cycle also plays a part.
